Riding + Horse Ownership 101

TWISTER

For the New or Soon-to-Be Horse Owner (Adults only)

This program is specifically tailored to teach the new or soon-to-be horse owner everything you need to know to have a safe, enjoyable, positive horse ownership experience.

I specialize in dealing with the 40+-year-old woman who is finally ready to get that horse she's wanted her whole life. At our age we realize how breakable we are and we don't have the fearless attitude of the child or teen student. (Nor usually their flexibility - so be prepared for stretching and flexibiity homework!)

I use a proven method of riding instruction called the Secure Seat Method developed by Jan Dawson, presdient and founder of the American Association for Horsemanship Safety. The method focuses first on developing a balanced, deep, secure seat in the saddle that allows you to move with the horse even when the horse makes sudden starts, stops, or changes in direction, and gives beginner riders the skill sets they need to quickly master comfortably sitting the most difficult-to-sit gait -- the trot.

Besides learning to ride, we start by learning to handle a horse correctly, minimizing risk of injury to both the handler and the horse. And along the way, we discuss horse health and nutrition; grooming and hoof maintenance (hands-on); emergencies (and non-emergencies that you can treat yourself), AVOIDING emergencies by following good horse-keeping methods; tack and equipment selection, use, and care; and what to look for when shopping for a good "starter" horse.

Twister is a veteran school horse who has taught students aged 7 to 70. He's 21 years young and you will love him!

I'm taking a limited number of students in Private Sessions (1 to 1-1/2 hrs.) for $40/session.

(Riding Student weight limit is 180 lbs. - those who can't meet the weight requirement can take ground handling and horsecare lessons.)

I try to set a good example for my students by wearing a helmet when I teach (you'll sometimes catch me without one, but never while riding!). Concussions are very serious and easy to get from a simple fall off a horse.
Letty and DukeFormer School Horse "Duke" was used in Western riding lessons. My daughter and I used Duke to ride English and go over low jumps one summer when he was 18 years old -- he seemed to think it was great fun!
